Subjects included in this Lesson Plan: Language Arts & Technology

Brief Description: (Conclusion to a poetry unit)
Students will be use original poetry to create their very own unique computer generated greeting cards.

Approximate time required: 45 minutes (depending on students keyboarding skills)

Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives: 
English/Language Arts
2.03 Read a variety of texts.
3.01 Respond to fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama using interpretive, critical, and evaluative process.
4.07 Compose a variety or fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama using self selected topic and format.
4.10 Use technology as a tool to enhance and or publish a product.
Technology
1.1 Recognize the influence of technology on life in the U.S.
2.4 Use a word processing application to create and format a document.

Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives: 
The student will create a computer generated greeting card with a poem they created.

Materials/Resources Needed: 

  • Classroom Computers,
  • *Superprint* software program
  • Printer and paper

Pre Activities: 

  1. Go over Poetry Strategies
  2. Discuss different techniques used by poets
  3. Review Elements of a poem
  4. Reading Item poems
  5. Versa Tiles poetry activities
  6. Read poetry orally
  7. Discuss the influence of technology on poets in the U.S. today (desktop publish to word process and illustrate their work, Internet to publish world wide, e-mail to make contacts, Internet resources for background information on the setting of the poem, etc.).

Activities:

  1. Students create a poem
  2. Demonstrate the software program *SuperPrint*
  3. Students word process their poem.

Guided and Independent Practice:
The students will create a computer generated greeting card with his/her poem. They will use illustration, and word processing in creating their greeting card.

Closure:
When the students complete typing, proofreading and printing their greeting cards they will fold their papers constructing a greeting card.

Assessment
Poetry Rubric:  The students will produce an original poem using strategies and elements of a poem.
Observation:  Students are able to create and format their computer generated greeting card.
