Morehead Elementary at Camp Glenn
April 30,2002

Subjects included in this Lesson Plan: Math and Technology

Brief Description: Students will review EOG math terms and definitions found in their math notebooks, and pick between 15 and 20 words to put in a word search.

Approximate time required: Math terms and definitions are on going throughout the year. Preparing the word search takes 2 - 40 minute class periods. One class period is in the computer lab.

Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives:
Math
1.1 Use place value through millions- including reading, writing, and comparing numbers in a variety of forms.
1.6 Understand factors, common factors, and greatest common factors of numbers.
1.8 Identify prime and composite numbers.
2.1 Demonstrate formulas for the area and perimeter of squares and rectangles.
2.3 Using appropriate vocabulary to compare and classify polygons and polyhedra (cubes, cylinders, cones, prisms, and pyramids.)
2.4 Understanding of radius, diameter, chord, center, and circumference.
3.1 Investigate patterns that occur when changing numerators or denominators. 4.6 Use the range, median, mean, and mode to describe a set of data.

Technology
1.4 Describe the Acceptable Use Policy
2.3 Use keyboarding skills to improve speed and accuracy.
3.7 Evaluate information found via telecommunications for appropriateness, content, and usefulness.

Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives: The students will define and understand math terms introduced throughout the year and develop an “EOG word search” for a fellow student to solve.

The students will demonstrate an understanding of the math terms and definitions introduced throughout the year. This will include:

  1. The understanding and computation of rational numbers.
  2. An understanding and the use of the properties and relationships in geometry, and metric and customary measurements.
  3. An understanding of patterns, relationships, and elementary algebraic representation.

Materials/Resources Needed:

  1. Math notebook with math terms and definitions
  2. Internet
  3. Web site:  http://www.puzzlemaker.com/
  4. Word processing program
  5. Computer
  6. Printer

Pre Activities:

  1. Students will need to review math terms and definitions introduced throughout the year.  These are words they have written and defined in a section of their math notebook (3 ring binder) and are found on the EOG.  (Examples: denominator, numerator, prime, composite, radius, diameter, chord, median, mean, polygon, factors, least common multiple, etc.)
  2. Students need to pick between 15 and 20 words to place in a word search.  Check spelling and no spacing between terms (example order of operations).
  3. Students are reminded of the Acceptable Use Policy before they begin the Internet activity.

Activities: This lesson was done in the computer lab during a 45-minute period.  Students must have access to the Internet.

  1. Go to http://www.puzzlemaker.com/ several puzzles options are available, we choose puzzle maker-Word Search (with or without a Hidden Message).
  2. Next follow the steps and directions given with each.
    1. Enter the title for your word search.
    2. Enter the size of your word search puzzle.  15 letters by 15 letters works best.
    3.  Word Search puzzle options decide between
      1. Use each letter only once.
      2. Share letters occasionally.
    4. Word Search puzzle output type click on HTML
    5. Enter your words.
    6. Enter your words.
    7. Create a Printable Version.

Closure: Students will exchange puzzles and search for the math terms listed at the bottom of the page.

Assessment:

  1. Math terms and definitions where checked for spelling errors.

  2. Definitions were checked to see if they were clear and correct.

  3. Math terms and definitions were checked to make sure they were matched correctly.

Teacher note:  This is a great way to prepare students for the EOG in Math.
