SUBJECTS INCLUDED IN THIS LESSON: Math, Technology, Health, and Language Arts

BRIEF DESCRIPTION: Students used nutritional knowledge to plan balanced meals and then used grocery store flyers to calculate costs of the meals. They also had to create word problems using these flyers.

APPROXIMATE TIME REQUIRED: One week to complete the AIG tiered assignment

STANDARD COURSE OF STUDY GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:
Language Arts: 
5.08 Create readable documents through legible handwriting and word processing
4.10 Use technology as a tool to enhance and/or publish a product
Technology: 
2.3 Use keyboarding skills to improve speed/accuracy 
2.4 Use a word processing application to create a format
Math: 
1.18 Solve multi-step problems using an organized approach, and selecting additional strategies
Health: 
5.03 Plan, select and prepare healthful meals and snacks that emphasize the principles of the Food Guide Pyramid

TEACHER’S LESSON GOALS/OBJECTIVES: The student will use the computer to type a word problem created for the AIG tiered assignment

MATERIALS/RESOURCES NEEDED: 
  • Health (Chapter 5), 
  • grocery store flyers, 
  • computer, printer and paper

PRE-ACTIVITIES: 

  1. Complete Chapter 5 Health-Nutrition
  2. Complete AIG tiered assignment
  3. Remind students to use proper keyboarding skills to help improve speed/accuracy when entering their word problem on the computer. 

ACTIVITIES: 

  1. Use computers to type and print out chosen word problem in format chosen by the teacher. Solve the word problem.  Sample below:
    • Create a header, right align and enter name, 
    • Center title of your word problem in bold, 14pt, 
    • Left align and double space word problem in plain 12pt, 
    • Press return 4 times, enter your answer in italics style
  2. Use spell check
  3. Save then Print your word problem.
  4. Fold bottom part of the paper up so it hides your answer.
  5. Display for others to solve your problem.

CLOSURE: Student will show the proper solution to their word problem

ASSESSMENT: Possible 100 points
1. Type the word problem using the format correctly 25 pts
2. Correct solution 50 pts 
3. Spelling/grammar 25 pts
