Research Project on Concentration Camps during World War II

Approximate time required: 3 hours

Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives:  
English/Language Arts
Competency Goal 2:  The learner will use and evaluate information from a variety of sources.
4.01 Analyze the purpose of the author or creator and the impact of that purpose by:

  • evaluating any bias, apparent or hidden messages, emotional factors, or propaganda techniques.
  • evaluating the underlying assumptions of the author/creator.

4.02 Develop (with limited assistance) and apply appropriate criteria to evaluate the quality of the communication by:

  • using knowledge of language structure and literary or media techniques.
  • drawing conclusions based on evidence, reasons, or relevant information.
  • considering the implications, consequences, or impact of those conclusions.

Competency Goal 6: The learner will apply conventions of grammar and language usage.  
Technology
1.2 Demonstrate an understanding of copyright by citing sources of copyrighted materials in papers, projects, and multimedia presentations.
3.1 Select and use technology tools to collect, analyze, and display data. 
3.2 Use word processing/desktop publishing for assignments/projects. 
3.3 Research, create, publish, and present projects related to content areas using a variety of technological tools.
3.4 Use database (Internet)  relevant to classroom assignments.
3.5 Apply search strategies used in a database (Internet).
3.9 Conduct online research and evaluate the information found as to the validity, appropriateness, content, and usefulness.

Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives:     Students will be aware of the holocaust and the persecution of specific ethnic groups in Europe during World War II. We will have read pages 709 through 711, in Prentice Hall Literature Timeless Voices, Timeless Themes Silver Level. This gives the basic background information for reading the drama. 

Materials/Resources Needed:

  • Prentice Hall Literature Timeless Voices, Timeless Themes Silver Level.
  • Computer/printer
  • Internet access
  • Web resources 
  • Altas

Activities:   

  1. Teacher reviews Internet search strategies before students go on-line. 

  2. Students will go on-line to do research on concentration camps during WWII. 

  3. The students must first look at the web sites to evaluate whether the sites are reliable sources. 

  4. Then the students will have to find information on the location of the camps, the ethnic background of the people interred in the camps, and how many people died. 

  5. The students will have to draw a map of Europe with the locations of at least four of the following camps: Bergen-Belsen, Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Dachau, Mauthausen, and Chelmno. 

  6. The project must be presented on either poster board or in a written essay format. Written research facts must be presented in word processed form with printed draft and copy saved on classroom disk. This written research must be in students own words with source page in correct format.

  7. Along with the written research, students will turn in a separate map with the concentration camp locations, and pictures from the internet to support their research. 

  8. Each student’s finished product should include an Internet site review form explaining why they believed this site was a valid site with authentic information. 

  9. Students should proof read and edit their final product for sentence structure, punctuation, grammar usage, spelling, and organization. 

  10. Students demonstrate an understanding of copyright by citing sources of copyrighted materials.

    1. Countries of allied controlled Europe correctly identified. 15 pts.
    2. Countries of Nazi controlled Europe correctly identified. 15 pts.
    3. Location of the four concentration camps correctly identified. 30 pts.
    4. Map key and compass clearly presented on map. 10 pts.
    5. Internet source for information and rubric for site assessment 30 pts.
    included.

    Rubric for written research project
    1. Research written in correct informational format. 25 pts.
    2. Spelling errors - 1 point taken off for each error up to 15 pts. 15 pts.
    3. Capitalization errors - 1 point taken off for each error up to 10 pts. 10 pts.
    4. Subject/Verb agreement - 1 point taken off for each error up to 10 pts. 10 pts.
    5. Content - Research paper focuses on the assigned task and written 40 pts.
