Brief Description:
Students will use their knowledge about the Earth's time periods to construct a book displaying geologic changes for an elementary audience.

Approximate Time Required:  Four weeks of 45 minute sessions

Curriculum Areas NC Standard Course of Study:
Science
3.01 Interpret ways in which rocks, fossils, and ice cores record Earth's geologic history and the evolution of life. 
3.02 Evaluate evolutionary theories and processes: 

  • Biological. 
  • Geological. 
3.03 Examine evidence that the movement of continents has had significant global impact: 
  • Distribution of living things. 
  • Major geological events.

Computer/Technology Skills
1.1 Model ethical behavior relating to security, privacy, passwords, and personal information.
1.2 Demonstrate an understanding of copyright by citing sources of copyrighted materials in papers, projects, and multimedia presentations.
3.1 Select and use technology tools to collect, analyze, and display data.
3.2 Use word processing/desktop publishing for assignments/projects. (KU/WP/DTP)) 
3.3 Research, create, publish, and present projects related to content areas using a variety of technological tools.

Teacher's Lesson Goals and Objectives:

  1. The student will use desktop publishing to write, illustrate and publish a children's book.
  2. Students will be able to summarize changes on the Earth over time.
  3. The student will orally read their books to elementary students
Materials:
  • Computer 
  • Desktop Publishing program
  • Printer
  • Media Center access
  • Internet access
Pre Activities
  1. The students will be introduced to the project.  What to do, checklist, etc. and project requirements
  2. We will read and learn about each major era and time periods including climate, dominant life forms and events for each.

Activities

  1. Students analyze first and second books to examine the readability level and arrangement of text and images
  2. Teacher models how to simplify information so first and second graders can understand the concepts they are trying to get across. 

Independent

  1. Students will create a timeline and create a rough draft of their book.
  2. Students do peer editing on each other's books.
  3. Students create their book on the computer using  (text and graphic/clipart/drawings)
  4. Students observe copyright and ethical issues when creating their books.
Closure: 
Student read their books to 1st and 2nd graders.

Assessment

  • Students' books will be assessed using a rubric and checklist
