Brief Description:
Students will use their knowledge about the Earth's time periods to
construct a book displaying geologic changes for an elementary
audience.
Approximate Time Required: Four
weeks of 45 minute sessions
Curriculum Areas NC Standard Course of Study:
Science
3.01 Interpret ways in which rocks, fossils, and ice cores record
Earth's geologic history and the evolution of life.
3.02 Evaluate evolutionary theories and processes:
3.03 Examine evidence that the movement of continents has had

data.
3.2 Use word processing/desktop publishing for assignments/projects.

Teacher's Lesson Goals and Objectives:
- The student will use desktop publishing to write, illustrate
and publish a children's book.
- Students will be able to summarize changes on the Earth over
time.
- The student will orally read their books to elementary
students
Materials:
- Computer
- Desktop Publishing program
- Printer
- Media Center access
- Internet access
Pre Activities
- The students will be introduced to the project. What to
do, checklist, etc. and project requirements
- We will read and learn about each major era and time periods
including climate, dominant life forms and events for each.
Activities
- Students analyze first and second books to examine the
readability level and arrangement of text and images
- Teacher models how to simplify information so first and second
graders can understand the concepts they are trying to get
across.
Independent
- Students will create a timeline and create a rough draft of
their book.
- Students do peer editing on each other's books.
- Students create their book on the computer using (text
and graphic/clipart/drawings)
- Students observe copyright and ethical issues when creating
their books.
Closure:
Student read their books to 1st and 2nd graders.
Assessment
- Students' books will be assessed using a rubric and checklist
