Advertise It and They Shall Buy!

Exploring Technology Systems: Communications and Multimedia production. Computer/Technology Skills.

Brief Description: Students will design and produce an advertisement for the product of their choice using the PowerPoint program. The audience for this advertisement is the producing company that is looking for the perfect advertising agency.

Approximate time required: One to two 44 minute class periods.

Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives:
Exploring Technology Systems: 
5 Apply design criteria
5.01 Identify design criteria
7.05 Produce a multimedia product 

Computer/Technology Skills: 
1.1 Model ethical behavior relating to security, privacy, passwords, and personal information.
1.2 Demonstrate an understanding of copyright by citing sources of copyrighted materials in papers, projects, and multimedia presentations.
1.3 Investigate occupations dependent on technology.
3.1 Select and use technology tools to collect, analyze, and display data.
3.2 Use word processing/desktop publishing for assignments/projects.
3.3 Create, publish, and present projects related to content areas using a variety of technological tools.


Lesson Goal/Objective: Student will produce a PowerPoint presentation, utilizing design criteria.

Materials/Resources Needed: PowerPoint program, Adobe Photo Deluxe program, use of computer lab, digital camera, Internet access, computer projection system.

Pre Activities: Students must have used the Internet before to find pictures. They must have had experience with a digital camera and Photo Deluxe. Teacher will have discussed, prior to this class, advertising design techniques and criteria, copyright laws and protocol in reference to the Internet, and the impact of advertising on the buying public.

Activities: Teacher has his computer hooked up to the projection system so that students can follow along with his actions on their own computers.

Guided Practice: On his own computer, with students following along on their own, teacher shows students how to:

-open PowerPoint program;
-click on Blank Presentation;
-choose the blank layout-click OK;
-to get background, go to Format-Background; student's choice;
-go to insert-text box, insert into the slide, write text;
-go to insert-picture, from file or clip art, insert into slide
-go to slide show, click custom animation, click effects, choose and apply;
-click ok. 
- go to slide show, slide transition, set timing of slide.

Independent Practice: Students begin to create a three-slide presentation utilizing skills they have been taught. Teacher must be available to assist. 

Closure: Final discussion on the impact of multimedia presentations to sell a product. Advantages and disadvantages discussion on the use of presentations in advertising.

Assessment
50%: Correct use of the two programs required for the project;
25%: Proper use of design technique;
25%: Completion of presentation in the time allotted.
