Brief Description: Students will compose a melody by placing words on the music staff
Approximate time required: 80 minutes (2-40 minute classes)

Music

Technology
2.1 Use technology tools to collect, analyze and display data.
Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives:
- The student will demonstrate their understanding of pitch placement on the treble staff by spelling familiar words with
note heads.
- The student will apply their knowledge of note naming by spelling words on the Doodle Pad.
- The student will play the words they have composed for the class.
Materials/Resources Needed:
- computer with projection system
- Music Ace Software program
- worksheets (*see
NOTE below)
Pre Activities: The students will need to complete Music Ace Lesson 7 and have knowledge of the names of the lines and spaces on the staff.
Activities:
- Explain how the Doodle Pad works, the different instruments to choose and the different note values.
- Pass out the Word Games worksheet and the list with 3,4,5, and 6 letter words containing the letters A-G.
- The students will choose 5 words, one from each section of the word sheet.
- Notate their chosen words on the Word Games worksheet.
- Place the 5 words on the Doodle Pad. The student will choose which instrument to use and what note values they want for each letter of the word. If theirs is a letter in the word that does not appear on the staff, leave it out.
Closure: The student will play their melody words for the class. Other students will listen and show respect for their peers compositions.
Assessment:
- Observation: Students will be demonstrating their understanding of pitch notation through their compositions on the Doodle Pad
- Pencil Paper Test: Word Games worksheet will determine if they know the correct pitch placement. (sent in pouch)
