Brief Description:   The students will compose music to use for the BES-TV News broadcast.

6.01 Identify simple music forms when presented aurally including AB, ABA, AABA, Call and Response, and Introduction/Coda.;

1.1 Recognize the influence of technology on life in the United States. 3.6 Participate in curriculum-based telecommunications projects as a class activity.   

Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives:  The student will be able to use the Rock, Rap N Roll program to compose music.  They will understand and apply the concept of Musical Form.  Students will understand how technology can be used to compose music.  The students also are to understand and become aware of the use of music on broadcast television.

Materials/Resources Needed:  Rock Rap N Roll software and teaching guide (available from Scott Foresman); PC Computer; floppy disc, Projection System; Cheat Sheets (adapted from teaching guide); if you are going to record the music to a tape, appropriate hardware will be needed.

Pre Activities:
Students will need some knowledge of Musical Form

Activities:

  1. Explain the Main Menu and choose a studio style.
  2. When studio is chosen, listen to the song loops then students choose a form and a background beat from the song loops.
  3. Explain add effects from each part of the studio:  voc-a-lizer, mouse-kickers, 1-2-3-4-5-6 row, Q-W-E-R-T-Y row, key map, song-a-lizer, recording feature.
  4. When composition is complete, demonstrate how the song is recorded on the computer.

Closure:   The song is recorded on a floppy disk to be transferred to the TV room where it will be recorded on to a tape.  Name the song.

Assessment:  The students will compose music throughout the year to be used on the TV news broadcast.  The songs will be stored on the tape and floppy disk.  The students will also teach other students from the team how to use the program. This lesson will be assessed throughout the year as students compose music for the live TV News broadcast.
