Brief Description: Students are using AppleWorks to draw and paint a Christmas card or card for any holiday, birthday, etc.

Approximate time required: 45 min

Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives

  • Identify uses of the computer at home and at school

  • Place the cursor at a specified location.

  • Identify and use electronic drawing tools to combine graphics and text.

  • Use appropriate vocabulary

  • Refine images

  • Elaborate on a theme

  • Exercise flexibility when approaching a problem-solving situation

  • Identify how technology affects how things look and how they are done.

  • Discuss different ways of making art

  • Discuss art related jobs today that did not exist in the past, i.e.., photographer, videographer, and computer artist.

Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives: The student will create their own computer made Christmas card.

Materials/Resources: 

  • computers, 

  • computer lab

  • projection system, 

  • color printer

  • original drawings and 

  • sketches.

Pre Activities: sketch their ideas on paper

Activities:

  1. Students create their holiday message and design  the 1st draft of their card on paper. 

  2. Students  make appropriate color choices for their card.

  3. Students use the computer and open the AppleWorks painting application.

  4. Students use appropriate keyboarding techniques to enter their holiday message. 

  5. Students draw and color their original design on the computer. 

  6. Students will print their card.

  7. Students will fold the card, address an envelope and mail them.

Closure: Each student will have a successful piece of computer made art. Students will mail these out to family or friends.

Assessment:  

            Observation: I will be looking for neatness in drawing, overall composition, spelling and appropriate color choices.
