Study of an Artist---Student Choice

Subjects included in this lesson plan:  history, inventions, events, writing skills, Internet research, oral skills

Brief Description: The students have to choose an artist to research, type a 1l/2 page paper and do an oral presentation. Students have to research information from three resources and tell why that person is important. They must find major events during the time discussed and major inventions.

Approximate Time Frame: One week of class and three weeks of independent out of class time was given on the project. 

Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives:
Technology:  
l.2 demonstrate an understanding of copyright by citing sources of copyrighted materials in papers , magazines, and multimedia presentations.
3.1 Select and use technology tools to collect, analyze, and display data.
3.2 Use word processing/desktop publishing for assignments/projects.
3.3 Research, create, publish, and present projects related to content areas using a variety of technological tools
3.5 Apply search and sort strategies used in a database.
3.9 Conduct online research and evaluate the information found as to the validity, appropriateness, content, and usefulness.

Visual Art
5.03 Compare relationships of works of art to one another in terms of history, aesthetics, and cultural / ethnic groups.
5.04 Recognize and differentiate the existence of art movements, periods, and styles.
6.02 Evaluate the ways in which a work of art reflects or communicates the diverse experiences of the artist.
6.05 critique artwork evaluating purpose, tone, and style in an oral or written expression.


Materials / Resources Needed:

  • Internet connected computers
  • copies of Scholastic Art
  • art reference books
  • copies of list of artist found on the Internet

Pre-Activities: Students must have previous Internet experience using information for reports and essays. Previous art history lessons that focus on the questions (What is important and why do we study these artist ?).

Activities:  

  1. The teacher will discusses how students will find information on the artist (Internet search strategies, search for art books in the media center) , 
  2. Teacher and class decide what to include in the essay 
  3. Review how to cite and create a bibliography. 
  4. Next will be discussed how to graph different events and inventions.

Guided Practice:  

  1. The teacher writes and draws examples for students.
  2. Students are given typed pages of artist on the Internet. 
  3. The teachers gives possible web sites and time in the computer lab to work. 
  4. An outline for the paper should be complete at the end of the first week.

Independent Practice:  

  1. After one week of guided practice, questions and answers the students would be ready to create an outline for the typed paper and /or work on the graph about the events and inventions. 
  2. The students can discuss any aspect of the project with the teacher but they must work to finish the project out side of class.

Closure: The teacher repeats the requirements with examples and an open question time. Then the teacher goes over how the students should give their oral presentations.

  3. How to use the voice. 

Each student should follow the outline given after the first week or give the teacher a revised copy of the outline . The teacher should have an outline that works with the oral presentation. The student should used some information about the major events and inventions during their orals.

Assessment:  The assessment covers the quality of the written expression in the 11/2 typed paper about the artist, the number and quality of events and inventions found for the graph and how well the oral lesson and the outline stay together.
