Subjects included in this Lesson Plan: Math and Technology

Brief Description:  Students will create patterns using fun and exciting software.  

Approximate time required: 15 minutes

Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives:
Technology
1.4 Demonstrate correct care and use of computers.
2.2 Place the cursor at a specified location.
2.3 Identify items by different attributes using manipulatives and/or software.
3.1 Group items by different attributes using manipulatives and/or software. 
Math
Describe likenesses and differences between and among objects.
Sort by a given attribute; sort by own rule and explain.
Identify, copy, continue, and describe patterns.
Create patterns with actions, words and objects.

Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives:  The student will create patterns using age appropriate software. This will help students strengthen visual discrimination skills. The student will learn how to use computer and mouse.

Materials/Resources Needed:

  • Computer

  • Millie’s Math House

  • Printer and paper

Pre Activities:

  1. Students will need to be able to demonstrate an AB pattern using math manipulatives (farm animals).  
  2. Teacher reviews correct care and use of computers.

Activities:

  1. Students will enter Millie’s Math House and will be guided to the patterning game.
  2. Students will listen to oral directions given by the teacher.
  3. The teacher will model how to make a pattern.
  4. The student will use the cursor to sort the animals in a pattern of their own design.
  5. Students describe the pattern they designed.

Closure: Review patterns. Students will print out the patterns they created using Millie’s Math House. These printouts will be placed in the students portfolio to show mastery of AB patterning.

Assessment:  Observation check list

Student is observed using computers properly

Student successfully uses the cursor to move the objects.

Student is able to group objects.

Student is able to create a pattern with objects.

Student is able to describe the pattern they created.

Student can describe how objects are alike and different.
