Mom and Me and Kid Keys
Amelia Luther
Letter Recognition
Bogue Sound Elementary
Brief Description:
Children begin to use Kid Keys with the help of their moms.
It is very important to take the time to guide each child and
let them each experience typing their name, using the mouse and
touching the appropriate keys. We all learn best by DOING not
WATCHING!
Approximate time required: 20 minutes
Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives:
No SCOS for Pre-K
Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives:
The student will..
- realize that computers help us do our work.
- practice typing the letters in their name.
- find letters that look alike.
- follow one or two step directions.
Materials/Resources Needed:
- Computer
- Kid Keys computer program....
- Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is a good program to use as a follow
up activity.
Pre Activities:
- Parts of the computer ( keyboard, mouse, computer screen)
should have been introduced in the classroom.
- Students should have had an opportunity to use the computer in
the classroom with the guidance of the teacher.
Activities:
begin to click on the Kid Keys Icon and follow the steps to begin
the letter activity. Students will begin to find the matching
letter and become familiar with the keyboard.
- Moms guide students as they: follow each step to begin
selected program.
- Moms will guide students as they file and quit the program and
the end of our computer time.
Independent Practice
- Students will choose Kid Keys with little or no help and
follow each step to begin and enjoy this letter recognition and
keyboard activity.
- They will also choose file and print to print out their own
certificate and file and quit at the end of our computer lab
time.
Closure:
Students should be praised for becoming more independent and for
recognizing and finding the letters on the keyboard. Students
should be given an opportunity to share their experiences in the
computer lab and to share their special certificates showing their
progress.
Assessment:
Students were assessed individually as they worked in the lab with
their moms . Students moved from being guided through the
program ... to becoming totally independent and printing their
Kid Keys certificate.
Kid Keys was chosen because it allowed the students to be
involved by touching the keys and getting wonderful feedback.
Students chose other program such as Math Rabbit and ClarisWorks for
Kids while in the computer lab.
Examples of their artwork was filed in their portfolios.
