Subjects included in this Lesson Plan: Math, Technology

Brief Description:  Students will demonstrate the ability to develop patterns using the computer.

Approximate time required: 20-25 min.

Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives 
Technology (from Kindergarten SCOS)
1.1--Identify the computer as a machine that helps people work and play.
1.2--Identify the physical components of a computer system.
1.3--Demonstrate respect for the work of others.
1.4--Demonstrate correct care and use of computers.
2.2-- Place the cursor at a specified location.
2.3--Identify items by different attributes using manipulatives and software.
3.1--Group items by different attributes using manipulatives and/or software.


Teacher's Lesson Goals/Objectives: 
  • The students will be able to copy and continue a pattern created by the teacher with 80% accuracy.
  • The students will be able to create and continue a pattern by themselves with 80% accuracy

Materials/Resources Needed: 

  • computer 
  • monitor,
  • keyboard,
  • mouse
  • KidPix

Pre Activities:

  1. Teacher discusses and demonstrates correct care, use of computers and respect  for work of others.  
  2. Students make patterns on a string and with other manipulatives.
  3. Students learn to use the mouse to place the cursor at a specified location.
  4. Students practice patterns on the computer.
  5. Students cut and paste patterns.

Activities

  1. The teacher will discuss the parts of the computer and discuss its function.
  2. The teacher will work with each child individually and demonstrate a pattern using KidPix.
  3. The child will identify and continue the pattern.
  4. The child will create an original pattern and repeat it successfully. 
  5. The child will use KidPix letters to write his/her name on the finished product.
  6. Each child will print his/her work.

Closure

  • Review child’s pattern
  • Review the parts of the computer
  • Review the ways computers help us work/play

Assessment:  
Teacher observation: 

  • to see if student continued patterns correctly
  • to see if student created pattern correctly
