Congratulations to Harkers Island's very own Evan Guthrie for making 4th chair Tuba in the 2008 All-District Concert Band. Evan competed with hundreds of students from eastern North Carolina for this honor. Evan returned to Greenville on February 1-2, 2008 and participated in the 2008 Clinic & Concert that was held on the campus of East Carolina University. The concert went quite well and Evan did a fantastic job during the concert weekend. This is quite an honor for our band program, our schools & for Evan and his family.

Congratulations to our 7th & 8th grade Downeast Band members who won a 1st place trophy in the 2006 Music in the Parks competition held in Williamsburg, Virginia May 5-6, 2006. Band members competed against 5 middle school bands from North Carolina with a full 2-point victory over our nearest competitor. Of the 11 middle school and junior high bands competing at all levels in the contest, our group had the second highest score of the weekend. This marks the second consecutive year that band members from Downeast have competed on a national level. Last year the band placed 2^nd at the same competition. Band members and chaperones had a great trip and lots of fun on Saturday in Busch Gardens. Mr. Pettit and Mr. Joe are very proud of the fine performance and behavior exhibited by band members and thank everyone involved for a job well done!

Congratulations to all 7th & 8th Downeast Band members who participated in the N.C. Concert Band Festival on March 9, 2006 at Edgecombe Community College. Our band received all Superior ratings for their performance which is the highest rating awarded. This is the third consecutive year that the Downeast Bands have scored all Superior ratings at N.C. Concert Band Festival. Thanks to all of the parents who came along as chaperones and thanks to all of the band members for a job well done!
