Sea Grasses

Background of Subject

The person we interviewed was Dr. Judd Kenworthy.  The reason he became a doctor at NOAA Lab is because he was fascinated by the wildlife on the coast.  He wanted to grow up and learn about it. We interviewed him because he knows so much about seagrass.  He felt that the seagrass is in danger of being destroyed.

Description of the Issue

Seagrass grows out in the water and filters the ocean.  It is one of the things thatkeeps the ocean clean and healthy.  The

seagrass is the only thing that provides shelterand habitats for many forms of life.  The seagrass beds also prevent runoff.  With so

many things being built on the coast, seagrass will soon be gone.

Challenges

Some of the challenges in seagrass bed restoration is finding unpolluted areas that will give the grass time to grow. It needs to be safe from predators such as crabs and such.  Most of the seagrass in this area is needed to keep some types of marine life alive.  But if we can’t have working seagrass beds, we can’t have fish to catch and eat.  If we can’t eat them, neither can the larger fish and then the whole food chain is disrupted causing mass extinction.  These challenges must be confronted and solved for a bright future to take place.

Solutions

We can breed grass in labs and then plant them in large groups at a time so it is

hard for them to die out in that area.  We can also get other groups like schools to help

plant it in large numbers.  If we plant more seagrass in polluted areas it will just die, so

we need it in convenient but safe areas.
