Heavy Metals Pollution

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

We interviewed Dr. David Evans.  He works at the NOAA Lab in Beaufort.  He works in Florida with mercury pollution.  He studies how mercury gets into fish, if bigger fish have less than tiny fish.  He takes samples of the fish and puts it into a machine that tells him how much mercury is in that type of fish.  After he records the data of how much mercury is in that type of fish he takes the sample and puts it into the freezer along with all the other samples that he has measured the amount of mercury from.

Issues and Problems

The problem with heavy metals is that it gets into sediments, which gets into the plants, which gets into the fish, which gets into us. When heavy metals are consumed by humans, it can cause health problems.

It comes from mining industries and the metals get into the atmosphere. When it rains, the metals come right back down into the soil and water.

One major problem is mercury. Mercury causes serious health problems that can lead to death. When we eat fish  that have mercury in their system, the mercury gets into our system. If this problem is not fixed, then it could lead to brain damage and/or death.

 Solutions

To stop this issue we could not mine so close to the water and we should be more aware of the metals and what they are getting into and how much they could hurt us and the fishes and other animals that are in the water.

Mercury pollutes the fish and we eat the fish, them it builds up in our bodies to cause brain damage and or death.  It comes from the factories into the air. It rains down to become methyl mercury.  It travels to the lake beds, which the tiny animals eat the mercury, the tiny fish eat the tiny animals, the bigger fish eat the tiny fish, and we eat the bigger fish which leads to brain damage and or death.
