Habits of Mind Connect Students andTeachers in Learning Process

The Habits of Mind , developed by career educator Arthur L. Costa, are 16 dispositions displayed by intelligent people in response to problems, dilemmas, and enigmas that occur in everyday life, in and out of school.  At Newport Middle this year, Eagle staff will use these habits to assist students to experience success educationally, in their personal growth, and in their relationships with others.  Students and staff have been challenged to identify what Habits of Mind they are using in the learning or  teaching process and how  this strengthens their resolve to grow.  They have also been challenged to identify the habits with well-known people, past and present.    Briefly explained, The Habits of Mind are:

— Persisting. Stick to it!  Keep on trying.
— Managing impulsivity.
Planning ahead, taking your time.
— Listening with Understanding and Empathy.
Respecting others views and emotions.
— Thinking flexibly.
Looking at things in different ways.
— Think about thinking (Metacognition)
Aware of your own learning strategies and
     progress.
— Striving for accuracy.
Aiming for high quality and correctness.
— Questioning and posing problems.
Knowing what you need to know and how to find it
     out.
— Applying past knowledge to new situations.
Building on what you know.
— Communicating clearly.
Speaking and writing honestly and simply.
— Gathering data through all senses.
Paying attention to everything.
— Creating, imagining, innovating.
Generating new and novel ideas, being original.
— Responding with wonderment and awe.
Expecting joy and surprise in new experiences
    and learning.
— Taking responsible risks.
Accepting challenges that will stretch you .
— Finding humor.
Being able to laugh at yourself and with others.
— Thinking interdependently.
Being able to work with and learn from others
— Remaining open to continuous learning.
Learn from experiences.  Be proud and humble
enough to admit you don’t know.

Parents are urged to use the Habits of Mind at home by reviewing them with their children.  They are located in the Student Agenda and are further explained.  Please use these Habits to challenge your child to focus on learning and growing from each experience they encounter.

NMS To Participate in NC Big Sweep

Are you looking for a way to help in your community?  Would you like to earn volunteer hours?  Would you like for your neighborhood to be litter free?  If so, come out and join our NC Big Sweep team on Saturday, October 11 from 9 am until 1 pm.  We will be picking up litter along the roads surrounding NMS.  NC Big Sweep is a statewide clean-up effort established in 1987.  Since then, more than 230,000 volunteers have collected over eight million pounds of trash from North Carolina watersheds.  Volunteers should meet at NMS on October 11 at 8:45 am.  Bring water, a snack, and wear close-toed shoes.  The Newport Police Department will be patrolling the area as volunteers work to make Newport litter free.  Adult volunteers are needed for this event.  If you would like to participate, please sign up in the front office.  If you would like to be an adult volunteer, please contact Tanya Scott at 223-3482 ext. 249.
