1st Quarter

English Language Arts:  Reed

Week of October 29th:

Students will do vocabulary at the beginning of each core with the culmination of a test on Friday. In grammar, students will begin work on the verb and its tenses. They will also learn about regular and irregular verbs. In literature, students will be learning the skill of making predictions and continue their work with character traits. The short story featured this week is "Seventh Grade" by Gary Soto.

Week of November 5th:
Students are working on the novel Journey to Jo'burg. There are nightly readings, vocabulary, and discussion in class.
Week of November 12th:
Journey to Jo''Jurg continues this week. Students have completed the reading of the book and the written questions. For their end projects and test grades students will be choosing five characters to  complete Character Trading Cards. The Character Trading Cards include an illustration that reflects the character's personality, their name, gender, age, physical description, relationship to the other characters, personality traits, how their character traits have changed from the beginning of the book to the end o f the book. Their last statistic is to explain the significance of the character to the book.
Week of November 19th:
Students will be studying "who reads the writing tests?" and how important it is to make the author want interested in the writing. In addition we will demonstrate how verbs make strong engines.
Week of November 26th:
Students will being writing for the problem solution paper. They will be introduced to unique sentences which will led to creative text structures. Students will make a "social security" card for support and elaboration to ensure that their writing includes enough detail for the state test.
Week of December 3rd:
Transitions will be added during this week to help students papers read more smoothly and to help build bridges to the reader's mind. It is the hope of our time that our students will not just become proficient writers, but writers that carry their  own voice and humor.
Week of December 10th:
Students will continue to use thinking maps and the kinesthetic movements to help them remember the organization patterns they have learned. As a class  we will continue with the parts of speech and continue to stress the use of strong, precise verbs and words. At this point , the use of sentence combining will help students vary their sentence structures.
Week of December 17th:
Using the different versions of Cinderella, students will have to evaluation which of the fairy god persons gives the best advice. After making that choice, student s will be writing advice columns to the questions to that character from the book send into the.
Week of December 24th:
Students will learn about counter argument and will be given advertisements in which they will have to produce counterargument. They will then use ii in a given prompt.

General Math:  Baker

Week of October 29th:

  Students will write and simplify expressions by combining like terms. Wednesday is an Early Release Day.

Week of November 5th:
Students will review for a test on Patterns, exponents, writing and simplifying expressions with a Jeopardy game on Monday and a practice test on Tuesday. The test is on Wednesday.  Students will reinforce concepts of integers and combining like terms by completing a RAFT activity.  We will begin balancing addition equations on Friday.
Week of November 12th:
Monday is Veteran's Day Holiday.  Students will solve multiplication and division equations. Students will practice balancing equations by simplifying and solving multi-step equations.
Week of November 19th:
Test on Tuesday. Wednesday is EARLY RELEASE.  Happy Thanksgiving!
Week of November 26th:
Students will solve and graph inequalities . Students will use equations, tables and graphs to represent functions.
Week of December 3rd:
We will continue our study of functions and inequalities. Test on Friday.
Week of December 10th:
We will use this week as a review of all concepts completed so far: Graphs and statistics, Integers, Expressions, Equations, Inequalities, Functions, Decimals, Fractions, and Measurement.
Week of December 17th:
Early Release December 19th.  Merry Christmas!
Week of December 24th:
Christmas Break

School resumes January 3rd.

Students will solve multiplication and division equations. Students will practice balancing equations by simplifying and solving multi-step equations.

Monday is Veteran's Day Holiday.  Students will solve inequalities and review for a test on order of operations, writing and simplifying expressions, solving equations and inequalities.

Week of October 29th:

This week, students will evaluate their hurricane presentations, learn how to determine heat index and wind chill and learn how tornadoes, thunderstorms, lightning and thunder are produced.

Week of November 5th:
This week student will being a study of climates.  Student will learn how elevation, latitude, and proximity to large bodies of water influence climate.  Part of this study will include using a database of climate data.
Week of November 12th:
This wee students will complete their study of climate and learn about biomes.  Part of the study of biomes is how organisms have adaptations which help them to survive in their environment and how an adaptation which is helpful in one environment is detrimental in a different environment.
Week of November 19th:
Students will finish their study of climate.  Part of this study will be making trading of the three climate zones.
Week of November 26th:
Students will begin a study of motion and forces this week.  Specifically, this week examine matter and motion.  This week will focus on average speed.  Students will do a lab activity Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday dealing with average speed.
Week of December 3rd:
Students will continue their study of matter in motion this week.  The focus this will acceleration.  Students will do several lab activities dealing with acceleration.
Week of December 10th:
This week students will continue their study of matter in motion.  This week students will learn about Newton's laws of motion and do lab activities to investigate inertia, applied and resistance forces and static and kinetic friction.
