6th Grade Science Class

 
Week of October 27:
End of the Nine Weeks is Tuesday, Oct. 28 

Current Event due dates for the 2nd nine weeks:  December 10 and January 14

Monday:  We will check the metric system test and the notebook quiz from Friday.  We will clean out notebooks and get ready for the 2nd nine weeks!

Tuesday:  We will begin our discussion of grams and the Metric System. 

Wednesday:  We will continue our discussion of grams/metric measurement.

Thursday:  We will practice using the triple beam balance.  Homework:  Find the difference between the actual mass and the target mass from today's class activity.

Friday:  Students will finish their study of metric mass and the use of the triple beam balance today.  Early Release

 

Week of November 3:
 
Monday :  We will begin our discussion of metric measurement and liters today.  Students will learn how to properly use graduated cylinders, beakers, and test tubes.  Homework:  Find 3 examples of metric measurement used in household products.  Record the name of the product and the measurement.  Core 4- do the above assignment AND write the metric prefixes 5 times!!!

Tuesday:  Students will learn how to read a graduated cylinder.  Homework:  Be prepared for the metric system test on Friday!!!

Wednesday:  Students will complete the water mixing lab.  Homework:  Be prepared for the metric system test on Friday!!!

Thursday:  We will review for our metric system test on Friday.  Homework:  Be prepared for the metric system test on Friday!!!

Friday:  TEST ON THE METRIC SYSTEM!!!!!!

 
Week of November 10: 
Tuesday:  HOLIDAY. NO SCHOOL

Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday:  We will continue our study of the metric system.  Students will be using thermometers in class to learn about Celsius. 

Friday Homework:  Finish the 5 temperature conversion problems started in class today.

Week of November 17:
Monday:  Turn in homework from Friday!!  Students will take a notebook quiz today!!!

Tuesday:  We will begin reading Chp. 14 Section1 Temperature.  Homework:  Finish reading Chp. 14 Section 1

Wednesday:  Complete the "Kinetic Energy" Lab

Thursday:  Finish answering the questions for Chp. 14 Section 1 Temperature.  Begin doing temperature conversions using the fraction equation. 

Friday: Work due today:  Directed Reading Questions for Chp. 14 Section 1 Temperature, temperature conversion problems, and 5 facts about temperature recorded in the foldable.

Week of November 24:
All Trashion Show Projects should be removed from the Media Center by Tuesday, November 25.  Students with projects remaining in the media center will lose 5 points a day from their homework grade.  Please help us to make room for upcoming student work!

Monday:  We will read Chp. 14 Section 2 "Heat" together in class.  The discussion will focus on the transfer of heat from higher temperatures to lower temperatures.  We will begin an activity on heat transfer.

Tuesday:  Students will complete a lab in class to demonstrate the transfer of heat through hot and cold water.  Students will measure temperatures in Fahrenheit and will have to convert these measurements to Celsius.  Homework:  Find the difference between the final mixture temperature and the average temperature using the data collected in class today. 

Wednesday:  Early Release  We will stay in homeroom today.  However, students should bring their  homework to class and leave it in the core box.

Thursday and Friday:  NO SCHOOL Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Week of December 1:
Monday:  Read Chp. 14 Section 2 "Heat".  Complete questions 1-8 on page 429 of the textbook.  Complete the Chp. 14 Review on page 432.  Answer questions 1-12.  Work not completed in class should be completed for homework. 

Tuesday:  Students should turn in homework from yesterday.  We will complete a lab displaying the flow of heat from objects of higher temperature to objects of lower temperatures.  Homework:  Write the definition of heat and five facts about heat in your foldable. 

Wednesday:  We will make corrections to answers given for yesterday's lab.  Homework:  Get your progress report signed.

Thursday and Friday:  We will be working on an insulators vs. conductors lab in class.

Week of December 8:
Monday:  Students will finish graphing their results from the insulators vs. conductors lab using pages 21-22 in their notebooks.  They will also answer conclusion questions.  Homework:  Finish the conclusion questions and graph from class today.  Students should have taken a copy of the questions home from class today if needed.

Tuesday:  We will begin our discussion of Light Energy.  Complete the guided reading for Chapter 17 Section 1 "What is Light?".  Homework:  Current Event due tomorrow!!!

Wednesday:  Current Event Due today!! We will discuss answers from Chp. 17 Sect. 1 Guided Reading.  Students will explore the energy of light using various items in class. 

Thursday and Friday:  Students will be working on the "Light Lab" on page 24 of the science notebook. 

Week of December 15:
Monday:  Students will continue working on the "Light Lab".  Page 24 should be turned in by Tuesday.

Tuesday:  Students will complete a lab in class to help their understanding of color.

Wednesday:  NOTEBOOK QUIZ!!!

Thursday:  Any student missing work for core classes will be required to complete the work today.  Those students not missing work will be able to participate in math enrichment games and a bit of free time!

Friday:  Early Release !!!!    HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!!!! 

Week of January 5:
Monday:  We will begin our study of Rocks and Minerals.  Use Chapters 2 and 3 as references during this unit.

Tuesday-Friday:  We will be completing labs in class.  Students will record all work on page 25 "Classifying Rocks and Minerals" in their notebooks. 

Week of January 12: 
Monday:  We will use laptops in class to complete a research project on the uses of rocks and minerals in everyday life. 

Tuesday-Thursday:  Students will begin working in "mineral testing" stations.  All work will be completed in class and should be turned in by Thursday. 

Friday:  Today is the end of the nine weeks.  All missing work that can still be turned in should be submitted before the end of school today.  Any work not turned in will result in a grade of zero.  We will discuss our upcoming cordgrass project further. 

Current Event #2 Due Wednesday, January 14.

End of the 2nd 9 weeks is Friday, January 16.

Week of January 19: 
No School Monday through Wednesday! Enjoy your break!
