English Language Arts:  Willis

Week of  September 2:

Monday- Labor Day Holiday. We will be in the computer lab Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday working on basic computer skills. Thursday will be our regular library day. Students will be given AR goals for the nine weeks. There will be a reward for meeting the goal.

Week of  September 8:

Daily Warm Ups will be a variety of items. Some days we may work math problems, read and summarize a passage, edit sentences, or sing with Grammar Rock. This week we will begin learning parts of stories- setting, characters, plot, conflicts, climax, resolutions.

Week of  September 15:

We will begin our first novel, On My Honor. there will be a variety of activities to go along with the novel, comprehension questions, writing activities, and computer items. It will be divided into sections for each week.

Week of  September 22:

On My Honor Chapters 4-6. Friday we will be in the computer lab using a spreadsheet and graphing our information gathered during our swimming survey.

Week of   September 29:

On my Honor Monday  Computer lab finishing up our graphs. Chapters 7-9, vocabulary, reading the chapters 7-9....there will be a venn diagram comparing and contrasting Joel and Tony. We are also going to read a paragraph and draw what's in the paragraph.

Week of October 6:

On my Honor This week we will be working on the last 3 chapters of the novel. There will be a vocabulary sheet, quiz time questions, some "what if" questions, and finally the AR test and paper test for the end of the book.

Week of October  14:

We have started working on parts of speech. Have your child sing the noun song to you. We have also worked on capitalization and making nouns plural.

Week of October 20:

This week we will be continuing with the parts of speech with pronouns, followed by verbs. Once we complete the parts of speech we will be ready to begin our Masterpiece Sentences.

Week of October 27:

Tuesday end of nine weeks...Friday, October 31 Early Release. Sometime this week we are going to read "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" by Washington Irving and watch the cartoon version of it. Verbs and Grammar Rock this week too.

Week of November 3:

Tuesday- Election Day, get out and vote. "How it Feels When Parents Divorce" is a non fiction selection we will read to prepare to begin our next novel. We will be reading Hatchet. We will also read another nonfiction selection that was written by Gary Paulsen "from Woodsong".

Week of November 10:

Happy Birthday Marines! Tuesday Veteran's Day Holiday. Monday will be awards ceremony and rewards day for those who qualify.  Hatchet We will begin reading Chapters 1-4. There will be extra credit with this novel. I will let the students know about this later. We will be doing research on heart attacks and writing a paragraph with the information. Bonus points make an airplane. Instructions will be given.

Week of November 17:

Hatchet We will be finishing working on our heart attack papers. Lots of computer time will be logged when we finish. Bonus airplane due Friday November 21.

Week of November 24:

 26th Early Release 27th and 28th Thanksgiving Holiday Chapters 5-8 Researching black bears and writing with the information. Math in English class! We will be learning Distance= Rate x Time.....You won' have to answer the question, "How much longer?" on trips. Just tell them the facts and make them figure it out! We will be talking about things needed for survival. Bonus- make Brian's Camp.

Week of December 1:
Bonus- Brian's Camp due December 2. Hatchet Chapters 9-12 We will be looking at animal tracks and matching them up. There will be no bonus for this section. We will discuss Survivor the tv show.
Week of December 8:
Hatchet Chapters 13-16 We will learn about tornadoes.
Week of December 15:
Friday Early Release Bonus Mobile due December 16.  This week we will finish Hatchet. AR test and unit test s will be taken. We will end this unit with the movie "A Cry in the Wild" which is the story of Brian Robeson's time in the wilderness.
Week of December 22-January 2:
