Ms. Sutton's Summer 2007 Adventures

Ms. Sutton traveled to Corvallis, Oregon to learn about Microbial Oceanography. The one-week workshop was hosted by Oregon State University (OSU) and conducted by scientists from OSU, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI, California), Center for Microbial Oceanography Research and Education (C-MORE, Hawaii), Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI, Massachusetts), and NASA's Astrobiology Science and Technology for Exploring Planets (ASTEP). Scientists demonstrated cutting edge technologies used to identify new species of microbes in the ocean. The EARTH workshop allowed teachers to explore these new technologies and develop classroom activities that will assist students in understanding how these technologies, and the data they collect, are used to identify new species of microbes and the results of the plankton blooms these microbes can generate in the oceans. The activities developed during the 2008 EARTH workshop can be found by following this link: http://www.mbari.org/earth/2008/schedule.htm and scrolling to Friday's schedule. The slide show below provides a glimpse into Ms. Sutton's week at the EARTH Workshop.
