Seventh Grade English/language Arts

Week of November 12th:  Journey to Jo'Burg continues this week. Students have completed the reading of the book and the written questions. For their end projects and test grades students will  chose five characters to complete Character Trading Cards. The Character Trading Cards include an illustration that reflects the character's personality, their personality traits, how their character traits have changed from the beginning of the book to the end of the book. Their last statistic is to explain the significance of the character of the book.

 

Week of November 19th: Students will be studying "who reads the writing tests?" and how important it is to make the author want interested in the writing. In addition we will demonstrate how verbs make strong engines in sentences. Students with permission will watch the movie "Sarafina" which coordinates with their social studies curriculum.

 

Week of November 26th:Vocabulary list will begin again. Students receive five words a day and have a test on Friday. Students will be writing for the problem solution paper. They will be introduced to unique sentences which will led to creative text structures. Students will make a "social security" card for support and elaboration to ensure that their writing includes enough detail and support for the state test.

 

Week of December 3rd:  Vocabulary lists will be given during the week with the test on Friday. Transitions will be added this week to help students' papers read more smoothly and to help build bridges to the reader's mind. It is the hope that in time our students will not just become proficient writers, but writers that carry their own voice and humor.

 

Week of December 10th:  Vocabulary lists will be given during the week with the test on Friday. Students will continue to use thinking maps and the kinesthetic movements to help them remember the organizational patterns they have learned. As a class we will continue with the parts of speech and continue to stress the use of strong, precise verbs and words. At this point, the use of sentence combining with the help students vary their sentence structures.

 

Week of December 17th: Vocabulary lists will be given during the week with the test on Friday. Using the different versions of Cinderella, students will have to evaluate the books to determine which of the fairy god persons gives the best advice. After making that choice, students will be writing advice columns addressing the questions that the characters from the book send.

 

Week of December 24: Vocabulary lists will be given during the week with the test on Friday. Students will learn about counter argument and will be given advertisements in which they will have to produce counter arguments. They will then use counter argument in a prompt.

Week of January 4 and 5 : Students will be doing a reverse mapping an example paper to determine which elements are missing from the paper and what elements need to added or changed to create a higher level paper. The lesson includes reviewing the problem-solution prompt, analyzing a problem-solution paper, and mapping each piece of information from the paper on to a large poster size paper.

Week of January 7 - 11

Students will receive their vocabulary words for the week with their tests on Friday. The classes will review the individual steps of introduction, solution, advantages, counter argument, conclusion, and elaboration. In addition, they will begin a second problem-solution paper.

Week of January 14 - 18

An Accelerated Reader test is due by Monday January 14. Students may take the test before this date, but not after it. Students will receive their vocabulary words for the week with their tests of Friday. Work on their second problem-solution paper will continue. Students will reverse map their own papers to find missing information, revise their papers, and turn in the final drafts by Friday.

Week of January 23 - 25

Students will begin with an introduction to the evaluative paper which the second type of paper students in the seventh grade concentrate. We will look this week at elements of the evaluative paper though examples of papers that have already been written. By identifying those elements students will have quality elements by which they will be able to judge their own work.

Week of January 28 - February 1

Students will receive their vocabulary words for the week with their tests on Friday. Together the classes will learn to establish criteria by which to make good choices. Activities to strengthen leads and strong vocabulary will be completed. Students will being an evaluative paper on Wednesday.

 

Week of February 4 - February 8

Students will receive their vocabulary words for the week with their tests on Friday. Classes will be involved in writing an evaluative argument paper. The topic for the week will be as follows:  You are on a committee to select the teacher most worthy of being placed in the Educator's Hall of Fame. Please write a letter of nomination to submit to the election committee.

Week of February 11 - February 15

Students will go to the media center on Monday to select books, exchange books, and to take accelerated reading tests. The next accelerated reading test is due on February 25. Vocabulary words will be given 5 a day with the final test on Friday. Students will be finishing up their final drafts of their evaluative argument papers. In addition, activities will be completed on revision, strengthening the verbs used in an essay, and the best used of transitional phrases.

Week of February 18 - 22

Students have February 18 as holiday as teacher have a workday. Upon returning, students will receive their  vocabulary words each day with the final test on Friday, February 22. A trial timed test will be given this week. The prompt will either be problem/solution or evaluative/argument. Students will reverse map papers that have been written in prior years to finalized their preparation for the writing test on March 4.

Week of February 25 - 29

Students will go to the media center on Monday to select books, exchange books, and to take accelerated reader tests. Accelerated reading test #8 is due on February 25. Vocabulary words will be given each day with a final test on Friday. A final timed trial test will be given this week. The prompt will either be problem/solution or evaluative/argument. Students will reverse map papers that have been written in prior years to finalized their preparation for the writing test on March 4.

Week of March 3 - March 7

Students will go to the media center on Monday to select books, exchange books, and to take accelerated reader tests. Vocabulary words will be given each day with a final test on Friday. The writing test will be given on Tuesday, March 4. Please make sure your child goes to bed early and eats a good breakfast. It is also important that they be at school of time. Be assure you child that they have been well prepared for the test and all the teacher, the school, and parents ask is that they do their well best in planning and writing whatever prompt they are given. The remainder of the week will focus on an unit in poetry.

Weeks of March 10 - 21

Students will go to the medial center on Monday to select books, exchange books, and to take accelerated reader tests. Vocabulary words will be given each day with a final test of Friday. An author study with books by Katherine Paterson will take place from March 10 to March 21. Some of the books featured with include The Great Gilly Hopkins, Jacob, Have I Loved,  Come Sing Jimmy Jo,  and  The Flip-Flop Girl. Please looks for you child's reading schedule stapled in their agendas.
