10 Steps to Getting Good Grades
Believe in Yourself: In order for you to succeed, you have to believe in yourself and your abilities. Set goals for yourself in each academic area and strive to reach those goals.
Be Organized:
Use your agenda
Use binders for specific subjects
Have a homework folder/ specific place homework goes each night (so you always know where to find it!!!)
Have phone numbers for classmates.
Keep your locker and backpack clean and neat. Have weekly organizing sessions.
Get organized before you go to bed.
3. Manage Your Time Well:
Use class time to complete work.
Create a schedule to follow after-school to make sure assignments are completed.
Don't wait to the last minute to finish assignment ~ plan ahead.
4. Be Successful in the Classroom
Be in school, on time, every day.
Learn how to adapt to different teachers.
Be prepared for each class.
Sit in the front of the class if possible.
Be aware of your body language.
Always do your homework.
Participate in class.
Be a good group member.
Treat others with respect always!!
Involve your parents.
5. Take Good Notes
Be an active listener
Take notes to help you pay attention.
Recognize important information.
Take notes that are easy to read.
Go over your notes as soon as possible. Review, review, review.
Get copies of class notes if you're absent.
6. How to Read a Textbook
SCAN by reading subtitles, words in bold and italic print, summaries, charts, and review questions.
READ with a purpose.
REVIEW by scanning the material to check your comprehension.
7. Study Smart
Find a quiet place at home to study.
Get started.
Know your learning style (auditory, visual, tactile).
Organize your study time.
Know how to study for tests.
Use tricks to help you memorize information.
Have good computer skills.
8. Use Test-Taking Strategies
Give yourself positive messages about performing on the test.
Prepare thoroughly beforehand.
Mark the questions that you want to return to.
Look for key words in True/False questions.
Check your answers.
Take your time and read the directions completely.
9. Reduce Test Anxiety
Start studying early... do not procrastinate and cram the night before.
Act confident on test day. How you act can affect how you feel.
Take some deep breaths and continue giving yourself positive messages.
10. Get Help When You Need It
When you have a problem, do something to resolve it.
Ask for help from an adult.... we are all here to help you succeed!!!
