Peer Mediation

Newport Middle School's Peer Mediation program helps students resolve conflicts peacefully through communication, problem-solving, and expressing their feelings.  Peer Mediators help students in conflict listen to each other's points of view, focus on the problem, and create their own solutions.  Selected students undergo 6 hours of training in order to learn the peer medication process and conflict resolution skills.  After the peer mediators are trained they are able to help other students resolve minor disagreements, misunderstandings, and problems involving teasing or gossiping through a scheduled mediation session in the guidance office.  The mediations are held during focus time in the morning or during lunch time.   If the conflict can not be resolved by the students, it is always referred to the students' guidance counselor.

Qualifications for being a peer mediator:  Interested students must be nonjudgmental, respectful, and understanding LISTENERS.

We currently have eight 8th grade peer mediators and eleven 7th grade peer mediators.   Sixth grade peer mediators will be selected in January.
