Week of October 29th:

We will investigate our school pond (our very own freshwater ecosystem).  We will measure the dimensions of the pond and then draw it on paper.  We will also identify abiotic and biotic factors and different types of pond life by collecting some pond water and viewing it through microscopes.  The end of the week will be a cattail dissection (at the end of the lab will be a tasting of cattail).  Lastly we will begin to understand the affects of point and non-point source pollution as well as storm water runoff.

1st NINE WEEKS ENDS 10/30/07

10/31/07 EARLY RELEASE DAY

Week of November 5th:

The first part of the week we will finish our drawings of the school pond.  Wednesday (11/7/07) we will learn the different parts of the microscope and look at items such as paper, hair, and string through a microscope (It will be a good practice for Thursday).  Thursday we will take samples of pond water and look at it using a microscope to identify the living microorganisms in our pond.  On Friday we will talk about food webs and chains.

11/7/07  REPORT CARDS GO HOME (Return them signed the next day for a 100 homeword grade).

11/9/07  NATURE JOURNAL ENTRY #5 DUE

Week of November 12th:

NO SCHOOL MONDAY 11/11/07

After returning from a three day weekend, we are a little behind but not to worry I have adjusted the schedule so that we can still cover everything we need to.  Tuesday we will finish the microscope scavenger hunt and students will choose different abiotic items to view under a microscope.  Wednesday we will spend half of the class period viewing samples of biotic parts of the environment in order to help us identify what "lives in our pond" and the other half of the class we will review the parts or the microscope and their functions for a quiz that the students will take on Friday.  Thursday I will collect pond water samples from both the top and bottom of our pond her at school and students will identify various microorganisms that live in our pond.  Friday will start with a brief quiz on the parts of the microscope and their functions and then we will be reading selected pages about how and why living things need energy and completing a graphic organizer for the information read.
