How long will my child be in speech?

The decision to place a child in or out of the speech program is made by the  IEP Team.  The  team is made up of  (but not limited to) the classroom teacher, the speech pathologist, an LEA representative, and the parents or guardians.  Meetings are held at least once a year to review progress, goals and placement.  The team can meet at any time during the year if the need arises.

What if my child meets his/her goals?

If the speech goals have been met, the IEP Team will either meet to establish new goals or hold a re-evaluation meeting.  At the Re-evaluation Meeting, the team will decide if further testing is necessary to determine if the child is still in need of speech placement.

When will my child go to Speech?

The speech pathologist and the classroom teacher will work together to find a schedule that best meets the child's needs.  The classroom teachers are very understanding and will work with your child to make up any missed work.

Will my child feel uncomfortable about going to Speech?

In today's classrooms, many children leave the room for a variety of reasons.  Most of the speech students enjoy the attention they get in the small group setting.  At the elementary level, there is usually no negative feeling about going to Speech.
