"READING RULES"

                                                
      

                                                                          

                                                                            

 

 

Following are some spelling and reading "rules" that your children have learned at school.  Remember there can always be exceptions to every rule.

FSZL rule  

When a one syllable short vowel ends with a f----s---z---or l.  Double it.

cuff    miss   buzz   hill     pass   dull   staff   bell   dress

Exceptions

CK  rule

When a one syllable short vowel word ends with a /k/ sound, spell it with a ck.

Mack   trick   clock   duck   peck   stack   click   track

 

tch rule

When a one syllable short vowel word ends with a /ch/ sound, spell it with a tch.

batch   ditch   fetch   scotch   hutch   snatch   stitch  

Exceptions

When a one syllable short vowel word ends with one consonant and has one syllable ,double it before adding the suffix   ed  and ing.

hopping   hopped

rubbing   rubbed

fitting       fitted

begging   begged

padding   padded
