Terms to Know: March/April What is an annual review? An annual review is a meeting of the IEP team to discuss the student's progress, goals, and needs for the coming year. An annual review must be done once a year (either 1 time a school year or 1 time in a year's time). At this meeting, goals are looked at to see if they have been mastered, need more work, or are no longer appropriate to help the child. Strengths and needs of the child are also discussed as well as amount of time spent in the regular classroom and possibly the special education classroom. Modifications for the regular classroom and testing accommodations will also be discussed if they are needed. When invited to come to your child's annual review meeting, please come with any questions or concerns that you have for your child's education so they may be addressed. 5th grade students will be invited to attend their annual review meetings that will be held before they go to middle school. I hope that when appropriate, parents will support their children coming to this meeting. I believe it is so important for students at this age to begin to take ownership of their learning and that includes knowing about what is in their IEP.
