Dear Parent,
Your son’s or daughter’s science class will soon begin exploring Chapter 2, entitled
“Minerals of the Earth’s Crust.” In this chapter, students will learn about the formation,
mining, and identification of minerals. By the end of the chapter, students should
demonstrate a clear understanding of the chapter’s main ideas and be able to discuss the
following topics:
1. the four characteristics of a mineral (Section 1)
2. the two major classification groups of minerals (Section 1)
3. the classification of minerals using common mineral identification techniques (Section
2)
4. special properties of minerals (Section 2)
5. the properties that make a mineral a gemstone (Section 3)
6. environments where minerals are formed (Section 3)
7. differences between surface mining and subsurface mining (Section 3)
8. uses of minerals (Section 3)
Questions to Ask Along the Way
You can help your child learn about these topics by asking interesting questions as they
progress through the chapter. For example, you may wish to ask your son or daughter the
following questions:
· Why are some gems more valuable than others?
· How can you tell if an object is a mineral or not?
· Why are some people opposed to mining?
· Is there a way to get the minerals we need fron the Earth without harming the
environment?
