Healthful Living

Our Healthful Living Department consists of three teachers:  Gordon Churchill, Larry Lewis , and Darlene Rappa.  Two teachers  teach in the gym, weightroom, or outside on the field while the third is in health.  Students have health one week and spend two consecutive weeks in P.E.  We cover a variety of issues in health including nutrition,  fitness, avoiding drug use, staying away from smoking and alcohol abuse, mental and emotional health issues and behaviors that can lead to dangerous health habits.

We would like to enable your child to make wise lifestyle choices and to learn how to have fun and relax during his or her leisure time. We have certain parameters we would like our students to operate within to have a successful Healthful Living experience.

Students should dress in shorts, t shirts, socks and sneakers when they have P. E.  We encourage them to tie their shoelaces and ask that their shorts and shirts meet the school dress code. On chilly days , students are welcome to wear warm up suits or sweat shirts and sweat pants. Please do not let them try to wear jeans, tank tops, cargo pants , or hard soled shoes for P. E.

Student grades are based on participation in P. E., health class work and quizzes and a few skills tests.  Grades are weighted mostly toward P.E. participation.  Health classes will offer more academic rigor this year.  Classes will be held in grade level classrooms as follows: 6th= Spence and Fitts, 7th=Rosen and Haines, and 8th=DeGuile and Christopher.

We do administer the Presidential Test of Physical Fitness each year to all grade levels. Five components of fitness are measured: Flexibility- the sit and reach test, Muscular strength - pull ups, Muscular endurance - bent knee curl ups, Agility - the shuttle run, and Cardiovascular endurance - the mile run. This battery of tests can let students know their strengths and weaknesses and what they need to work on to improve their physical health.

We look forward to working with your children , helping them to grow into happy , healthy, and  well adjusted adults who know what to do with their leisure time. Let's have a great year. Go Minutemen!
