Reading Help
Questions for Reading Comprehension
The following questions will help your child analyze the fiction story they read and will improve their reading comprehension. You do not have to focus on every question after completing a story. Just choose a category to highlight with each book.
Setting-Where did the story take place? Tell me what the place was like. When did the story take place? (Past, present, future; day/night; etc.)
Characters-Who are the main characters in the story? How would you describe them? (Mean, nice, happy, sad, etc.) Do you like or dislike the main character? Why or why not? Choose one character. Why is he/she important?
Plot-What was the story mostly about? Tell me in less than 2 minutes. What was the problem? How did it get solved? Can you think of another way the story might have ended?
Details-Tell me two things that happened in the story. What was your favorite part of the story? Why?
Sequence-What happened first, next and last in the story?
Author's Purpose-What was the message/lesson the author was trying to say with the story?
Connections-Does this story remind you of any others you have read? How? Has anything similar happened to you? If so, what?
