MEET OUR TEAM

Janice Bates-West
Janice has taught here in Carteret County for 16 years; first at Camp Glenn and then she was part of the staff that opened Morehead City Primary. A licensed physical education teacher with a BS from Glassboro State college in New Jersey. Janice has a varied background in early childhood education that includes "Head Start" and "Early Childhood Intervention" programs. Her love of children and movement keeps her busy teaching year-round. Janice is a Morehead City resident and her family includes two teenagers and three adolescent dogs. Janice has integrated "Sign Language" and "Spanish" into her teaching as our school's diverse population has increased. She envisions a physical education class that challenges each child to reach for his/her greatest potential by using varied technology and "old-fashion" perseverance keeping our county's children healthy and active.
Colin Long
Colin will be returning for his 3rd year as a physical education teacher. Originally from Maryland, Colin moved here in August of 2005 because he loved the surfing and scuba diving opportunities that this area provided. He received his degree in health and physical education from Frostburg State University in Western Maryland and did his student teaching in West Virginia. Colin chose to teach at the primary level because he loves to teach the fundamentals of physical activities and break each skill down so that every student can understand them. His goal is for every student to leave Morehead City Primary with the knowledge and confidence to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Colin will be working this summer as a dive master on the Diver Down located on the Atlantic Beach causeway
Jennifer Kern
This is Jennifer's
6th year of teaching at Morehead City Primary and her six year within
Carteret County Schools. She enjoys incorporating "super skills" or character
education and good sportsmanship into games and activities. Prior to teaching
grades K-3 physical education Jennifer earned her bachelor's degree at Atlantic
Christian College and master's degree at East Carolina University, taught middle
school physical education for five years, and managed a fitness center for a
private company. Jennifer's husband Dave and children Stevie and Allyson moved
to Newport in 2001 and enjoy the relaxed and friendly style of Carteret County.
