Pittman's Grocery opened in spring of 1947. The front
area of the store was where they sold their products. The back area was
where they lived. They sold groceries, tobacco products, car parts, shoes,
medicine, and gas.
On Thursday mornings, the owner would go to the
people's houses that didn't have any cars and pick up their grocery list.
Later in the afternoon, he would carry the groceries to the houses and
they would pay him cash or charge it and pay for them at the end of the
week.
The store was open Monday through Saturday and opened
at 7:00 a.m. and closed at 10:00 p.m. The store was closed every Wednesday
and every time there was a church revival. When church was over,
the store would reopen.
In 1950, the owner moved out of the back of the
store into his house he built next door and used the space for storage.
Pittman's Grocery closed in the fall of 1978 because of family health reasons.
