I conducted an interview with my grandmother Ivy Beryl Fulcher. She was
able to give a lot of background information about our hometown Stacy,
North Carolina. I learn about some of the men that carved decoys here,
and about different stores and places that also were here years ago. I
learned that the harbor is owned by my Dad's family. I also learned
what the men did with their boats before the habor was built.
My interview took place in the home of Ivy B. Fulcher in Stacy, North Carolina.
I started by asking about the men that carved decoys here. Grandma said
she could only remember two and they were Homer Fulcher and Irvin Fulcher.
(She isn't for sure if they were kin to each other or not). The harbor
was dug out with big machines. Before the harbor was like it is now, the
men docked their boats at a little local crab house.
We talked about the post office, it was use to be a little store until
they built the one we have now. The first postmaster that Grandma
remembers is Beaulah Hamilton. Mrs. Hamilton was the postmaster for
many years.
We use to have a school right where the Fire Department is currently located.
My granddaddy, Marvin Fulcher, went to school there until Atlantic school
was built.
Times have changed so much. Irvin, Homer and Beaulah have passed away.
The harbor is about same but the little crab house is gone. Ms. Patti Mason
is now the postmaster at the same old building that looks like a small
house. Our Fire Department is still there. We have two churches one on
highway 70 right across the from the post office. The other church is around
the Stacy loop. Our loop road is now paved. After all said and done
Stacy to me is the best place in the world to be, because it is my hometown.
