Atlantic's History

The small fishing village of Atlantic was settled around1740 and was originally called Hunting Quarters. It was renamed Atlantic in 1890. Atlantic was incorporated in 1905 but is not now active in municipal affairs.
The grounds for the Methodist Church were deeded in 1888, however, the church was built before that date. The Primitive Baptist Church was established in 1918. There are many churches in Atlantic all of which still have services except the Primitive Baptist. Most of their members have all died off or attend church somewhere else. New roads were paved in the 1930ís. The first post office was established in 1880. This is also the same year the school was established.
There have been a few businesses in Atlantic over the years. In a town of only 800 you can't have many businesses. Luther Smith Seafood and Clayton Fulcher Seafood have been here a long time. There was Smith's Grocery and Winston Hill and Sons' grocery, both of them are now out of business.
Atlantic Elementary school was established June 30, 1880. This school served Stacy, Sea level, Cedar Island, Atlantic and parts in between. The great thing about Atlantic is that it was the site of the first high school in Carteret County, and was established by Joseph W. Mason. It was also a teaching school for teachers and today it is a school of excellence, something every one in Atlantic takes great pride in. Atlantic is a great place to live and you know everyone who lives around you.

Atlantic was settled in the 1740ís and originally called Hunting Quarters. It holds two of the coasts largest seafood companies and has many churches. In addition there is a post office and a school.
In the 1740ís,  Atlantic was settled and was originally called Hunting Quarters. Many years later, in 1880, the name was changed to Atlantic. The first post office was established in the same year with Thomas Chadwick as postmaster. The post office was located beside Clayton Fulcher Fish House, now it is next to the super market and the hardware store.  Atlantic holds two of the coast's largest seafood companies. They are called Clayton Fulcher Fish House and Luther Smith Fish House. Locals buy and sell fish at these two places. Many people work there and kids can get paid for doing odd jobs. There are other fish dealers as well. One is Drum Inlet Seafood, which use to be a Texaco service station. They now rent boat docks and camper sites.
The Atlantic Elementary School is small but successful. It has been a School of Distinction for four years in a row and in 2000, was awarded as a School of Excellence. Children from the communities of Atlantic, Sea Level, Stacy and Cedar Island attend this school. Kids from pre-k through 8th grade go there to learn. The school has one classroom for each grade.
There is a ferry business called Morris Marina Kabin Kamps and a Ferry Service. It leaves from Atlantic and goes to the Outer Banks. More specifically to the north end of the Core Banks. They have two ferries systems that runs spring, summer and fall upon demand. There is a variety of cabins you can reserve to rent. Also, there are bath houses available for tourists and campers. Core Banks is actually part of the National Park Service. The Ferry Service and camps are a lease consignment of the park service.
There are also many small businesses in Atlantic: Ginny Lou's Beauty Shop, Melissa Nail Shop, Neil Hills Garage, Mark Nelson's Garage, Hunter Hill Gas Co., Mutt's Cuts and Curls and Harris Net Shop. Many locals are commercial fishermen and work their own boats to make a living. Some people work far away from Atlantic and commute by car and plane.
