Historical Sites in Atlantic
Atlantic Gym
(two articles)
Atlantic gym was built by the Work Progress Administration
of North Carolina in 1935-1937. The gym was built to give people
jobs after the Depression and to replace the outdoor ball courts.
The inside of the gym has only had two types
of backboards - wooden and the new fiberglass. The floor is the original
tongue and groove floor with the exception of only a few boards that have
been replaced. Also, there have only been two types of heating systems.-
the old potbelly and the current steam heat with electric fans.
In 1984 the eighth grade class made wooden
college pendants. They are on each side of the gym. Also, there
are two flags, the North Carolina and American flag hanging in the gym.
There have been many coaches. To name
some: Paula Willis, Elmo Gaskill, and now Adron Nelson. Mr.
Nelson coaches the boys and girls basketball teams.
The Atlantic gym is used for school basketball
teams and is also used for Parks and Recreational basketball. P.E.
classes at Atlantic Elementary are held in the gym also.

Interview with "Miss" Hilda Brickhouse about the Atlantic
Elementary Gym
I interviewed "Miss" Hilda to get my information
about the Atlantic Elementary Gym. I asked her how long it took to build
the gym and how much it cost. It took about three or four years to build
and it cost around $8,000 to $10,000 in the 1930's. The school needed somewhere
to have a physical education classes and that is why it was built.
Basketball, volleyball and other sports were played
when "Miss" Brickhouse was young. She played on the school volleyball and
basketball team and said it was fun.
