A Word From Our Principal

 April Lilley, Principal

Our home page is designed to acquaint you with our unique island school setting. We are a true community school surrounded by a maritime environment. As noted in our web site, our students are involved in many academic and extra-curricular activities.

We are proud of our school.  For the 1998-1999 and  1999-2000 school years, HIES was recognized as a School of Distinction.  In those same two years, we gained the status of being one of North Carolina's Top 25 Most Improved Schools.  In 1999-2000, we were ranked as the number one Most Improved School.  Since 2000, each year we have achieved the status of School of Excellence.  In 2004-2005, we ranked as one of  NC's Top 25 Most Improved Schools for the third time.

Our goal for the future is to continue to provide a quality education.  We commit ourselves to our profession and understand the impact our actions have on the lives of all students.  Therefore we promise to constantly evaluate our instructional strategies, always striving to achieve excellence.

I welcome you to our web site.
