Dear Parent/Guardian and
Student:
All Honors and Advanced
Placement English classes at East Carteret High School require
prerequisite reading and a test on the material generally
administered the first day of Honors English class. The purpose
for this requirement is to have a literary base for comparison
and analysis from the first day which will serve as a discussion
platform throughout the semester. This requirement has been in
place and active for over ten years. The only variable concerns
book titles.
The following are the
summer/prerequisite assignments for 2009-2010:
Honors English I
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
Honors English II
Alive by Piers Paul Read
Honors English III
The Crucible by Arthur Miller and Ethan Frome
by Edith Wharton
Honors English IV
And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie and
1984 by George Orwell
AP Language and
Composition
Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking by
Malcolm Gladwell and additional assignments (contact Mrs. Nicki
Guthrie)
Please be advised:
-
Prerequisite reading and
testing is required for every Honors and Advanced Placement
English course at East Carteret High School.
-
Retesting is not permitted
in Honors English courses. Retesting is permitted in
other English courses and electives accompanied by review
and reteaching.
-
Essay and paper revisions
are recommended and encouraged; writing is a learning
process. Should an Honors student revise a paper, the
original grade averages with the new grade. Individual
teachers may include additional requirements and
stipulations. These are the minimum.
While all teachers who teach
the same or similar courses communicate and collaborate, each
teacher is responsible for assessing and instructing his/her
students within the parameters of the North Carolina Standard
Course of Study; LEA, school, and department requirements as
well as the needs of each individual class. Teachers and
students are individuals and therefore while classes within the
same course description will be similar and have equal
expectations, they are not and should not be expected to always
be exactly the same.
Thank you,
East Carteret High School English Department
