East Carteret High School serves
seven "Down East" rural communities and the small town of
Beaufort on the southern Outer Banks of coastal North Carolina.
The approximately 640 students who attend ECHS come largely from
families who have lived and worked in the area for several
generations. Most students have very strong connections to
the community and to the school, with many having at least one
parent and/or grandparent who attend ECHS. Many of our
graduates are the first members of their families to graduate
from high school, resulting in a significant number of
first-generation students attending college.
The student population is
approximately 80% majority and 20% minority students.
Several of the feeder schools are classified as Title I,
resulting in a number of ECHS students being classified as
"disadvantaged," based on free and reduced lunch rosters.
The faculty consists of 60 full and part time staff including a
principal, two assistant principals, two school counselors, an
at-risk counselor, a special education team, media coordinator,
instructional technology coordinator and on a consultant basis:
an AIG specialist, school psychologist, school nurse, and social
worker.
ECHS boast and award-winning
