School Improvement Plans posted
The State of North
Carolina requires all public schools to have School Improvement
Plans (SIPs) in place. Carteret County Public School System
principals worked with teachers to created two-year SIPs. According
to Carteret County Public School System Assistant Superintendent Mat
Bottoms,
the plans focus on three goals - the three most pressing areas of
need in a particular school.
Each School Improvement Plan is comprised of goals for improvement,
steps to reach these goals, strategies to maintain a safe learning
environment, and a Title 1 plan (if applicable) to demonstrate
funding priorities for those federal dollars. The plans are derived
from an exhaustive analysis of data, self-assessments, instructional
review, and school procedures. Action steps to reach these goals
were formulated by each school’s entire staff through collaborative
discussions and innovative ideas. These plans are dynamic as the
schools will review them semi-annually to determine progress and to
implement new goals for those that have been attained.
According to Mr. Bottoms, every six months the principal and
teachers will review the plan for their school. Once a goal has been
completed it will be replaced with a new goal that addresses another
area of concern. Mr. Bottoms noted the goals must be aligned with
the state goals and local school system goals.
