Pre-kindergarten, kindergarten registration dates set

            Parents or guardians of eligible four-year-old children are encourage to register them in April for pre-kindergarten programs in Carteret County. Community agencies that sponsor preschool programs are collaborating efforts to serve at-risk four year old children.

            Those interested in applying for the 2008-2009 pre-kindergarten programs must do so at any of the following sites:

April 7 – Newport District, 12-5 p.m., at St. James United Methodist Church, 1011 Church St., Newport;

April 8 – Beaufort District, 12-5 p.m., Grace Presbyterian Church, 2101 Hwy. 70E, Beaufort;

April 9 – Hwy. 24 - Bogue Sound and White Oak District, 12-5 p.m., Western Park Community Center, 275 Old Hwy. 58, Cedar Point;

April 10 – Morehead District, 12-7 p.m., Carteret County Health Department, 3820 Bridges St., Morehead City;

April 11 – Down East – Atlantic, Harkers Island and Smyrna Districts, 12-5 p.m., Smyrna Pentecostal Holiness Church, 85 Hwy. 70E, Smyrna.

            The purpose of the pre-kindergarten program is to provide high quality educational experiences that will enhance school readiness for four-year-olds. The pre-kindergarten program is free and open to all those who meet the program requirements. Children must be 4 years old on or before August 31, 2008.

            Pre-kindergarten programs focus on the child's health and physical development, social/emotional development, approaches toward learning, language development and communication, and cognition and general knowledge.

            To register for pre-kindergarten for the 2008-2009 school year, parents or guardians should take their children to one of the sites on the days listed above. They should take their child’s birth certificate and shot/immunization record and proof of the parent’s income, such as a 2007 1040 tax return or W-2 form.

            Initial applications will be reviewed and the placement process will being May 1, 2008. Student placement is dependent upon program eligibility guidelines and space availability.

Kindergarten registration dates set

Kindergarten registration dates have been set by the Carteret County Public School System, and all parents or guardians are urged to register their children. Registering students helps principals and teachers assign students to classes, ensuring that enough teachers are hired and that classes are not overcrowded.

            Registration for the 2008-2009 school year will be conducted at:
            • Atlantic Elementary School – March 19, 1-4 p.m.;
            • Beaufort Elementary School – April 15, 12:30-3:30 p.m.;
            • Bogue Sound Elementary School – May 1, 1-4 p.m.;
            • Harkers Island Elementary School – April 10, 1-4 p.m.;
            • Morehead City Primary School – April 28, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.;
            • Newport Elementary School – May 2, 1:30-4:30 p.m.;
            • Smyrna Elementary School – April 11, 1-4 p.m.; and
            • White Oak Elementary School – May 7, 1-4 p.m.

            All children five years of age on or before October 16, 2008, are eligible for enrollment in public school kindergarten.

            Requirements for complete registration include:

           1. completed registration form - form will be given to parents on the registration day

            2. immunization record (bring to registration)

                        State law requires the following documented doses:

                        5 DTP, Dtap or DT doses (if 4th dose is on or after 4th birthday, 5th does is                                           not requested - DT requires a medical exemption);

                        4 Polio (IPV OPV) doses (if 3rd dose is on or after 4th birthday, 4th dose is                              not required);

                        1 to 4 Hib doses (series completed if at least one dose given on or after 15                                            months and before 5 years of age, not required after age 5);

                        3 Hepatitis B doses (children born on or after July 1, 1994, are required to                                            have three doses);    

                        2 Measles doses (at least 28 days apart; 1st dose on or after 12 months of                                             age);

                        2 Mumps doses (one dose on or after 12 months of age and before age 16                                            months and a second dose before enrolling in school for the first                                                time);

                        1 Rubella does (on or after 12 months of age);

                        1 Varicella Vaccine does (children born on or after April 1, 2001 – the

                                    Immunization Board requires 2nd dose between ages of 4-6.

                        Vaccine doses administered less than four days before the minimum                               interval or age may be counted as valid.

                        A physician, health clinic or local health department administering the                             required vaccines must give a Certificate of Immunization to the person who presented the child for immunication. The certificate/record must include the following: Name, sex and date of birth; name and address of parent/guardian; number of vaccine doses given; date vaccines were given; and signature of physician or health department stamp.

            3. birth certificate, certified or mother's copy (bring to registration)

            4. North Carolina law requires a completed Kindergarten Health Assessment signed and                                  dated by a physician or health care provider within 12 months of entering                            kindergarten. This form will be given to parents on the registration day.
