New principals selected for Croatan High, Newport Middle

Joseph “Joe” R. Poletti will assume the principal position at Croatan High School and Michael “Mike” R. McKay II will take the principal post at Newport Middle School. Carteret County Public School System Superintendent Dr. Dan Novey announced the appointments June 23, 2010.

Mr. Poletti will begin his duties July 1, filling the vacancy left when Mat Bottoms was named Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. Mr. McKay will begin his duties in the fall, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of Bud Lanning.

“Mr. Poletti has served the school system well and in many areas,” Dr. Novey said. “This broad base of experience adds to his ability to share a vision for continued excellence at Croatan High School. Mr. Poletti emerged as the top candidate after an extensive search and rigorous hiring process. He was selected from over 40 candidates. Mr. Poletti is an outstanding communicator and I believe the students, staff and parents of Croatan High School will appreciate his accessibility and his enthusiasm.”

“Mr. McKay will bring outstanding experience as a middle and high school teacher and a former administrator,” Dr. Novey said. “He has shaped a vision of what to expect from a middle school learner in order to prepare them to succeed in high school. Mr. McKay emerged as the best fit for Newport Middle School from a talented pool of strong candidates and with input from the Newport Middle School community. I know the entire Newport Middle School community will find him a confident and approachable leader.”

Prior to that, he worked as the school system’s Director of Technology and Media. He has also been responsible for athletics, arts, healthful living and distance learning.
