Superintendent sends Letter to Editor

September 19, 2006

Dear Editor,

Around this time last fall the citizens of Carteret County were busy learning about the many needs of our school system and deciding how to cast their votes on the two bond referendums facing them in November. Those same stakeholders endorsed the two bond referendums totaling $50 million, and we began work.

To some the process might have seemed slow, but I can assure you much planning, testing and designing has taken place. The pace is quickly picking up as several small bond projects have been completed and two roofing projects are set to begin by mid-October.

The preliminary floor plan designs for four of the new construction projects called for in the bond referendums are complete, and the final design work is now taking place. These plans are on display at the Chamber of Commerce office in Morehead City, in the school system’s central office in Beaufort and online at www.carteretcountyschools.org. The plans are for the new construction work at Bogue Sound Elementary School, East Carteret High School, Newport Elementary School and White Oak Elementary School, and are also on display at those four schools.

Be assured, we are working to spend the bond money effectively and to get the most out of every dollar. The two bond referendums will fund much needed improvements to our school facilities, and we will work diligently to see the work is done as efficiently and responsibly as possible.

Sincerely,
Dr. David K. Lenker, Jr., Superintendent
