Information/Action
taking place at May 9, 2006, Board of Education meeting
BOND PROJECTS
UPDATE GIVEN
Bond Project Manager Keith Maready updated the Board on the bond project
work. He noted his confidence that the bond projects could be
accomplished with minor exception with funds approved by voters. He said
three current challenges existed The first one he noted was that the
Croatan High School auditorium was under funded to accomplish the
desired seating capacity, and he stated that options would be
forthcoming. The second were HVAC projects across the county, and he
noted that engineers have given options that could accomplish the goals
with approved funds. The third challenge were the roofing projects at
Beaufort Middle School and White Oak Elementary School, which called for
new metal roofs. Mr. Maready said both school sites have existing
conditions which question guaranteed waterproofing with metal, and he is
seeking additional professional opinions.
Mr. Maready noted that
scheduling was critical. He said, with timely decisions the Board could
expect the following:
Architectural Design – Designs for Bogue Sound Elementary and
East Carteret High to be prepared for bid by the end of the year. He
noted that occupancy of the proposed new addition at East Carteret High
would have a significant positive impact on renovation costs in existing
space.
HVAC/Electrical Design – All projects will be prepared for bid
by late fall 2006.
Roofing Design – Beaufort Middle and Broad Creek Middle roofing
designs will be prepared for bid by mid July 2006.
CONSIDER CHANGE IN
SCOPE OF ARCHITECT’S CONTRACT
Bond Project Manager Keith Maready requested the Board of Education
consider redefining the scope of work involved in the contracts. This
would involve new contracts being developed and reviewed by the Board
attorney, and then presented for consideration at the next Board of
Education meeting.
David Carr made the
motion to reexamine all current contracts for architectural,
HVAC/electrical and roofing work with recommendations from the
construction projects management team, the Board attorney and
Superintendent Dr. Lenker.
Al Hill
provided the second. The motion passed unanimously.
Dr.
Luettich noted this action would not slow the process on any school. He
suggested a bond update meeting with the County Commissioners take place
in the near future.
