Bond Projects
Work Taking Place

June 22, 2006, Bond projects update given to Bond Advisory Committee

- Project planning for all bond projects has been completed and each project has received an assigned value. This schedule / cash flow chart was approved by the Board of Education and presented to the County Commissioners. The schedule continues through the 4th quarter of 2010. The scheduled includes 13 categories and 71 projects.

- A few projects have been bid in recent weeks with very satisfying results. Those include the heating/ventilation air conditioning system at Broad Creek Middle School, the track and tennis court at West Carteret High track, the roofing at Beaufort Middle and the parking lot at East Carteret High. All the bids came in under budget.

-Planning studies have started on several other projects such as window replacement and exterior door upfit.

- The HVAC and roofing engineers continue to deliver plans for review by the Carteret County School team and additional projects will be bid in the near future.

- The Board of Education reached an agreement with SFL+a (Shuller Ferris Lindstrom & Associates) to remain as the architectural firm for several bond new construction projects. This new agreement reflects a revised fee structure and the assignment of a new architect of record. The design of the addition at Bogue Sound Elementary should be complete by the end of the year and construction should start in early 2007. The East Carteret High new classroom addition design should be complete by March 2007 and construction should start by summer 2007.

- Croatan High auditorium discussions continue and there is an interest in seeking additional funds to build a larger seating capacity. The project is currently listed at 400 seats at a cost of $2.6 million. At this time projections are: to build 600 seats an estimated additional $800,000 would be needed for a total of $3.4 million; to build 800 seats an estimated additional $1.7 million would be needed for a total of $4.3 million; and to build a 1000 seats an estimated additional $2.2 million would be needed for a total of $4.8 million.

- Although the work at Morehead City Elementary School is not part of the bond referendum package, it does focus on school improvements. The work at that school is being paid for by an interest free Qualified Zone Academy Bond (QZAB). Bids have been received for the HVAC and roofing at Morehead Elementary and both were under budget. The electrical bids for this project will be received soon.
