School bond
projects move ahead, timeline estimates established
In November 2005, Carteret County voters approved two school
bonds totaling $50 million. These bonds were approved to address the
cost of improvements and additions to 15 school system sites.
Work is underway on many of the projects. Below is an update of
the major project work to be done by site. Additional smaller project
work will take place. If the work has been bid or started, those dates
are provided. Otherwise, an estimated timeline for that work is given.
Atlantic
Elementary School all work scheduled to be completed in
September 2007 -
Modify heating ventilation air conditioning (HVAC) system to improve
humidity control, ventilation, eliminate airborne mold/mildew bids
will be received January 31, 2007, approximate start in early April
2007, completed in late September 2007;
Repair leaks, replace doors and renovate kitchen hood work is
underway and will be completed by end of summer 2007;
Replace main electrical power switch bids received January 26, 2007;
work will take place during spring break April 9-13
Beaufort
Middle School all work scheduled to be completed in November
2008 -
Modify heating ventilation air conditioning (HVAC) system to improve
humidity control, ventilation, eliminate airborne mold/mildew bids
will be received in mid-March with estimated start date in June 2007,
completed in November 2008;
Air condition gym part of HVAC work;
Renovate kitchen hood work will take place in summer 2007;
Replace boiler deaerator part of HVAC work;
Install new roof started work September 2006, should be completed in
April 2007;
Seal soffits to eliminate untreated outside air in building
estimated start in spring 2008
Bogue
Sound Elementary School all work scheduled to be completed in
fall 2007;
Construct six classrooms bids awarded January 9, 2007 and project
underway with dirt being delivered to site, estimated completion is
August 2007;
Modify heating ventilation air conditioning (HVAC) system to improve
humidity control, ventilation, eliminate airborne mold/mildew bids
awarded January 9, 2007, estimated completion is August 2007;
Replace two chillers completed;
Renovate kitchen hood part of HVAC work;
Upgrade sewer system to meet State environmental requirements
estimated completion in fall 2007
Broad
Creek Middle School all work scheduled to be completed in
January 2008 -
Modify heating ventilation air conditioning (HVAC) system to improve
humidity control, ventilation, eliminate airborne mold/mildew bid
date in May 2007, estimated completion date in January 2008;
Install new roof work started September 2007 and estimated
completion is May 2007;
Replace two chillers completed;
Renovate kitchen hood part of HVAC work;
Upgrade sewer system to meet State environmental requirements
estimated completion in fall 2007
Croatan
High School final completion date not established -
Construct auditorium budget for 400-seat auditorium available,
exploring possibilities for funding 800-seat auditorium;
Modify heating ventilation air conditioning (HVAC) system to improve
humidity control, ventilation, eliminate airborne mold/mildew to be
bid June 2007, estimated completion of June 2008;
Renovate kitchen hood part of HVAC work
East
Carteret High School final completion date not established -
Construction 24-classroom/administration addition bids to be
received February 28, 2007 with estimated completion July 2008;
Modify heating ventilation air conditioning (HVAC) system to improve
humidity control, ventilation, eliminate airborne mold/mildew will
take place after completion of new classroom addition;
Replace existing roof bid date in May 2007 is planned with
completion expected in February 2008;
Reconfigure administration/guidance area will take place after
completion of new classroom addition;
Replace one chiller and chilled water pipe insulation chiller
replaced, insulation will take place after summer 2008;
Renovate kitchen hood part of HVAC work;
Replace windows in main building divided into three phases with
phase 1 now in process, phase 1 and 2 estimated to be completed by
December 2007, phase 3 to be completed after new classroom addition;
Repair auditorium lobby ceiling and refinish stage floor will take
place after completion of new classroom addition;
Pave parking areas and service roads will take place after
completion of new classroom addition;
Paint interior and exterior of entire school will take place after
completion of new classroom addition;
Add electrical circuits and receptacles will take place after
completion of new classroom addition;
Remove asbestos in floor, walls and ceilings will take place after
completion of new classroom addition;
Replace flooring, light fixtures and faucets will take place after
completion of new classroom addition
Harkers
Island Elementary School all work scheduled to be completed
summer 2008 -
Modify heating ventilation air conditioning (HVAC) system to improve
humidity control, ventilation, eliminate airborne mold/mildew bids
to be received January 31, 2007, estimated start to be early April and
completion to be late September 2007;
Air condition gym part of HVAC work;
Renovate kitchen hood part of HVAC work;

existing roof estimated to receive bids in April 2007, start
construction in June and complete in September 2007;
Recondition fuel oil tank by blasting and painting work scheduled to
take place summer 2008;
Replace windows work estimated to start October 2007 and completed

Morehead
City Middle School all work scheduled to be completed in summer
2008 -
Modify heating ventilation air conditioning (HVAC) system to improve
humidity control, ventilation, eliminate airborne mold/mildew bids
to be received June 2007, start work August 2007 and complete April
2008;
Replace one chiller and chilled water insulation completed;
Renovate kitchen hood part of HVAC work;
Replace windows and ceiling tiles window work scheduled for
March-June 2008, ceiling tile work scheduled for March-May 2008;
Repair exterior walls and soffits work scheduled for March-May 2008
Morehead
City Primary School all work scheduled to be completed in fall
2008 -
Modify heating ventilation air conditioning (HVAC) system to improve
humidity control, ventilation, eliminate airborne mold/mildew
estimated work dates April 2008-October 2008;
Replace two chillers completed;
Renovate kitchen hood part of HVAC work;

Newport
Elementary School all work scheduled to be completed in spring
2009 -
Construct sixteen (16) classroom/administration building to receive

humidity control, ventilation, eliminate airborne mold/mildew to
