MRSA, health information available to community In recent news, Methocillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) has been a topic of concern in the community and in public schools. MRSA is a staph infection that is resistant to modern penicillin-type medications and is easily spread through human contact. This is a community concern and, because hundreds of students gather in schools each day, it is a school system concern as well. While curing the infection is quite complicated, preventing it is simple. Adults and children should wash their hands frequently using soap and water, making certain to clean under fingernails and scrub for at least 15 seconds. Hand sanitizers with at least 62 percent alcohol content will also assist in preventing the spread of bacteria. Another step in prevention is to avoid sharing personal items such as towels, razors, hairbrushes, sports equipment, bars of soap, etc. Anyone with or anyone who sees symptoms of MRSA should seek medical attention immediately. Information about MRSA can be found on many websites including http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dhqp/ar_mrsa_ca_public.html. The Carteret County Public School System strives to maintain a safe, secure environment for our county's students. We need the support of our community and our parents to continue to do this. Please be diligent in recognizing symptoms and seeking immediate medical attention. This will help maintain a healthy community and healthy schools.
