  English IV

Text Box: “‘How can copying some words actually hurt anyone?’  The reality is that plagiarism is an act of fraud that involves both stealing (another’s intellectual property) and lying (implying that the work is one’s own).  This undermines the principles of trust and respect that make education possible.  When they plagiarize, students hurt themselves because they fail to acquire the research, analytic, and writing skills that they would have learned by doing the assignment honestly.  Finally, plagiarism also victimizes those classmates who have legitimately earned their grades and degrees, and who will be competing with the plagiarizer for school admissions and jobs.”  (East Carteret English Department Handbook 2005)

Text Box: It is very important to cite sources correctly any time you use another’s work.  Not giving proper credit to those sources is plagiarism.

Text Box: The English Department at Croatan uses MLA format.  To utilize MLA with ease, go to www.citationmachine.net.  Click on MLA, and you should be able to find information on how cite any source.  There are templates as well for internet sources.  This site is user friendly.  Another site for textual citation is http://www.bedfordstmartins.com/online/cite5.html.  For style and format information go to http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/557/01/.  If a book is what you prefer, purchase an MLA Handbook.  There will be no excuses for sources not being properly cited.
