English IV

Journals are used daily to begin class.  Grammar will follow journals.

Vocabulary is done weekly and consists of one lesson per week.  Vocabulary quizzes will be every Friday.

Program Content: This course is designed to be a survey of different authors and themes present in British literature.  Grammar will be covered daily.  Composition assignments will be given and will be based on alignment with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.  Vocabulary will be completed on a weekly basis.

Annual Goals: The learner will…

  1. express reflections and reactions to print and non-print text as well as to personal experience.
  2. inform an audience by exploring general principles at work in life and literature.
  3. be prepared to enter issues of public concern as an advocate.
  4. analyze and critique texts from various perspectives and approaches.
  5. deepen understanding of British literature through exploration and extended engagement.
  6. apply conventions of grammar and language usage.

Models and Procedures for Determining that the Goals are Met:

  1. Grammar is evaluated with every written assignment except some in-class essays.  Other essays, both in and out of class, will be graded for structure, usage, and mechanics.  Awareness of errors creates an improved level of correctness in writing.
  2. Literature will be covered in class with instruction on the characteristic of each trend.  Students will apply this knowledge to works read independently.  The student will be asked to relevancy in his/her life.
  3. Group work is used to encourage cooperative learning.
  4. Long term assignments and the use of calendars help the student balance demands and schedule time to meet all deadlines.
