Technical Math 1 – Fall, 2008

Dear Students and Parents:

Welcome to Technical Math 1.  This class is designed along with Tech Math 2 to be a bridge from Algebra to Geometry.  Students are encouraged to take both classes, although some students may be ready for Geometry after Tech Math 1. 

 A general overview of the topics covered this semester:

Term 1:

Weeks 1 - 3:  Measurement (Metric System, Converting Units, Measurement Tools)

Week 4:  Maps and Scale Drawings 

Week 5:  Circles (Arc Length, Area of Sectors)

Week 6:  Angles (Measuring, Naming, and Calculating)

Term 2:

Weeks 7 -12:  Polygons (Properties of Regular Polygons, Area and Perimeter, Transformations in the Coordinate Plane, Triangle Trigonometry - sin, cos, tan)

Term 3:

Weeks 13-14: 3-Dimensional Figures (Identify, Volume, Lateral Area, Surface Area)

Weeks 15-16:  Data Analysis (Mean, Median, Mode, Range, Making and Interpreting Graphs)

Week 17:  Review

Week 18: Exams (Schedule to be determined)

Materials needed for class:  3-ring Binder with 5 tabbed dividers for math, notebook paper, graph paper, pencils, pens, scientific calculator, dry erase marker.

Note:  There are calculators available for students to use in class..

Classroom Expectations:

bulletBe Responsible…to complete work on time and make up work from absences within one week. 
bulletBe Respectful…of all people and property, returning borrowed materials at the end of class, leaving the room tidier than you found it, and behaving in such a way that promotes a strong learning environment.

Grading: Your grade in this class will be determined on a Total Points system.  Graded work will include Tests, Quizzes, Classwork (via Notebook Checks), and Projects.

 Web Page: Students are requested to check my web page (accessible through the school web page www.carteretcountyschools.org/chs ) on a weekly basis for important announcements.  Students are encouraged to check the webpage daily to keep up with any changes made to the agenda. 

Extra Help/Contact Information:

            I am available for extra help before school by appointment, and after school until 3:00 pm.  I encourage you to come in for help or clarification anytime you need to.  Please let me know ahead of time if possible when you are coming so I can make sure I am in the classroom.
